Digital Railway

The Next Generation Railway

Background

Network Rail’s (NR) Digital Railway programme will transform the nation’s rail network for passengers, business and freight, by replacing conventional signalling with digital signalling and train control technology. This will increase capacity, reduce delays, and improve safety. Our consultant team was seconded into NR’s Digital Railway programme, and to the East Coast Digital Rail Programme (ECDP).

The Digital Railway programme is the rail industry’s plan to modernise the country’s railway, led by Network Rail.

The ECDP will deliver the UK’s first intercity digital railway, on the East Coast Main Line, beginning with the stretch of track between London and Stoke Tunnel. More than 80 million journeys are made each year on the East Coast Mainline. The ECDP will save thousands of hours in delays.

Our Work On The Digital Railway Programme

  • As part of the team preparing the business case to the UK Government, we set out the scope and ambition for stakeholder engagement across local and national government, businesses, the rail industry and partners, the media and the public. Our strategy helped the East Coast Main Line Digital Rail team secure £350 million funding from the Department for Transport.
  • Alongside the East Coast Main Line, we worked to engage industry stakeholders and the supply chain bidding to form part of the delivery of the programme. We set out the strategy and led on engagement to connect the programme with innovative, small businesses to explore creative solutions for the delivery of digital rail.
